Feinstein to introduce legislation to establish 2 national monuments in Mojave Desert
Reporting from Barstow - Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) says she plans to introduce legislation today to establish two national monuments on roughly 1 million acres of Mojave Desert outback that is home to bighorn sheep and desert tortoises, extinct volcanoes, sand dunes and ancient petroglyphs.
Its centerpiece, Mojave Trails National Monument, would prohibit development on 941,000 acres of federal land and former railroad company property along a 105-mile stretch of old Route 66, between Ludlow and Needles.

Barstow High School built in the 1930's
Main building entrance. There are 7 halls, all uphill from here. Lots of grass and trees are gone from when I was here.

A sad episode in Barstow history
During the late 60's, Barstow experienced a population growth. Previous to this, there was only one high school with the mascot being the Riffians. A second high school was built and opened in 1967, John F Kennedy High. They were the Spartans. A great cross town rivalry existed between the schools. In 1978, JFK was closed and the schools re-merged. The decision was made to retire the Riffian mascot and chose a new one for the merged Barstow High. The BHS Aztecs were born. Several years ago, a large amount of Riffian items were found at a nearby dump. Much was saved by locals and given to the Mojave River Valley Museum. They have set up a wonderful display of these items, plus some donated things. BTW, if you ever visit Barstow, go to the museum. It is packed with wonderful items in great displays. Barstow Steve just might be there to give you a tour. The staff are very well informed also. I had a great time visiting with Steve and Margaret.

Yesterday, instead of my usual routine, which is dropping my kids off at the back of the high school in the morning, I drove to the front of the school where I could
see the new buildings. They've been freshly painted and look nearly finished on the outside. The electrical crew will be starting the installation of lighting and wiring devices (switches, receptacles, etc...) in the Classroom building next week. Here are some pictures I took yesterday to bring you up-to-date on the construction.
